「核文」とは、文中の行為語は品詞は何であってもすべて動詞に還元し、事物語は名詞に、量や質を表わす抽象語は形容詞や副詞に還元して、文章の各構成要素間の意味上の関係を、もっとも単純、明確な形式に再構成した基本構文のこと。
ナイダによると、英語の「核文」は次の7パターン。
1. John ran quickly.
2. John hit Bill.
3. John gave Bill a ball.
4. John is in the house.
5. John is sick.
6. John is a boy.
7. John is my father.
